Aminoglycosides traditionally have been administered every eight to twelve hours to achieve peak serum gentamicin levels of 5 – 8 microgram/ml to ensure efficacy in the treatment of serious Gram negative infection. As a result of postantibiotic effect and other pharmacodynamic factors, it is possible that aminoglycosides may be dosed less frequently than previously thought. To find out more about this important change, come to our next SHP Pharmacy Practice Forum, where Ms. Janis Chan will tell you more.
