Can I be a pharmacist in HK but iliterate in chinese language?

How realistic is it to be able to practice pharmacy in hong kong with an "ok" cantonese speaking ability but VERY limited chinese writing or reading ability?
anyone in, or know of anyone who is in this position currently enjoying a fantastic career in hong kong?
any thoughts appreciated
Thanks

silly cow

many such pharmacists in HK,

many such pharmacists in HK, i.e. "ok" cantonese speaking ability & very limited chinese writing or reading ability. not too sure if their career is fantastic. But frankly, even pharmacists who know chinese and english and french and what have you, do not enjoy fantastic career as pharmacists in hk - those who really enjoy must be practising in other kinds of fields.

so dont worry - always can try your luck, if not in the hospitals, then in the University, then in the community, then in the pharmaceutical sales and marketing then in the pharmacies chains, then in the school of pharmacy, so many choices - but one thing is certain - the career path is not too promising

thanks for the reply, is

thanks for the reply, is pharmacy in hong kong really that bad?

i am thinking of trying work in hong kong, but as it is a huge step to relocate from Australia to hong kong, i am trying to find as much information as possible about the work opportunities there. From what i gather, the pharmacy work in a hospital is quite similar to uk and aus, but retail pharmacy is a huge difference.

yes, the pharmacy practice

yes, the pharmacy practice in the hospitals are ok, but in the public hospitals, the patient load is huge and main bulk of work is still to ensure quality in dispensing routines. clinical work is picking up but still lack time and manpower to become service core.

the retail or we call it community pharmacy practice is still facing many problems - due largely to historical reasons. salarywisein the community is ok and not difficult to find one either. But actually one is paid for not working rather than working. that is the sad side of the truth.quite unbearable to those who are still professionally consciencious. many or may be some have lost this conscienciousness and find other means to pass their time and eventually come to a stage when they have lost the professional knowledge too and do not care any more if there is any change. So, this is the state of things for the pharmacy practice in HK.

Not quite believable as HK is one of the modern cities in the world.

This is due largely to historical fault and it will take a long time to change just as it has taken a long time for this to come about.

There are internal debates within the professional group, albeit not unsurmountable ones, about what to do to change the situation. Suffice to say, it is still a long long way before anything positive can be seen and effected. There is no urgency to change, as the government has more urgent things to do. the public is not complaining - as majority gets a satisfactory service from the public sector, leaving behind the community sector who are weak and divided.

so you may have to think carefully before you move. Dont jump into the hot fire unnecessarily.

good luck to you
