Starting from 16 February 2022, children aged 5-11 may start receiving fractional dose of BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for adults at the Children Community Vaccination Centers (CCVCs).

The BioNTech vaccine for children requires a special dilution procedure. Pharmacists will first need to prepare a diluted adult formulation of BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, and then withdraw the required 0.1ml (10mcg) from the diluted vaccine to prepare an individual paediatric dose. Since the amount of diluted vaccine required for children is very small, any bubbles present in the syringe will severely affect the accuracy of the vaccine dose.

The Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Hong Kong (SHPHK) and the Hong Kong Society for Immunisations and Travel Medicine (HKSITM) will organise a webinar on ‘5 -11 age group specific COVID-19 Vaccination Clinical Lead Sharing – how to remove air bubble(s) during vaccine preparation’, demonstrating how to optimise the safety and preparation of Paediatric BioNTech COVID-19 from adult formation using both LDV and  non-LDV syringes.
